Paws tumbling over dry gravel Karlè made a strained sound as she slipped and fell, winded as the air was pulled out from her lungs by the impact. There was a moment of long contemplation as the ache from the fall came and went and
with hesitation Karlè pushed onto her feet to start running again. It had been days since her dear friend had died, old and tired even though they had been born on the same moon as Karlè. It had been days since she had started
running and refused to stop. If she stopped she'd have to admit they were gone and if they were gone she-
Karlè tripped and fell again, this time the impact of hitting the ground knocking the first tear of a long stream began
to flow from her eyes. Days of avoiding and running and it had all finally caught up with her, she pulled into a tight ball, still doing her best to avoid the sadness even as she was caught in the midst of it. As if by poetic happenstance
the first drops of rain began to fall on the long draught starved land. She stayed where she was soaking up the rain as much as she soaked up her misery, letting time pass her by as the moment took hold.
She was cold. It
hit Karlè rather suddenly. She was soaking wet and cold and she wanted to be rid of the sensation. She stood up, looking around at the area she had ended up near in a new light, one less clouded by her inner turmoil. It was strange
but everything seemed brighter, more real now that she had cleared her emotions and with that clarity of mind she looked towards a collection of stones scattered across the ground and the dip in the ground they surrounded.
She
approached the dip in the ground, which quickly revealed itself to be the entry of a tunnel, strange but perhaps not the most pressing matter as Karlè slipped into the tunnel, shaking her pelt free of the as much water as possible
before addressing the tunnels that spanned out further down, a dim light echoing off the walls promising something strange and beautiful should she look. Wandering down the tunnel she stepped into a large cavern decorated in shining
crystals that ebbed and glowed.
By the following morning when the rain had ceased Karlè decided to stay and build a new life on this land, not knowing the growing pride that would eventually fall around her, built by her
own paws. [431]
